MEDS13009 - Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology 3

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit completes your study of obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound at the undergraduate level. In this unit you will explore the sonographic assessment of normal and pathological third trimester obstetric cases including the foetal biophysical profile. You will study the sonographic appearance, scanning techniques and pathological complications associated with multiple pregnancies. You will undertake an in-depth study of some foetal syndomes and consider the prenatal management of the foetus with a correctable defect. You will be introduced to the role of emerging techniques and diagnostic parameters in obstetrics and gynaecology, such as the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Doppler, 3D/4D ultrasound and spatio-temporal image correlation (STIC).

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Introduction of an Indigenous component to the written assessment to explore the concept of equity and equality in healthcare.
Recommendation
Consider incorporating an Indigenous component to the written assignment that allows students to research differing incidence rates of disease in the Indigenous population and explore reasons why rates of disease vary in the non-Indigenous and Indigenous communities.

An Indigenous component was added to the written assessment.

Students valued the feed forward sessions to ensure they were aware of expectations and could clarify any aspects of the assessment in a one-on-one environment.
Recommendation
Consider continuing the feedforward sessions

The feedforward sessions were not offered this year, but many questions about assessments were addressed in the Q & A forum and during tutorials.

Students valued the case study examples and interactive Kahoot quizzes during tutorials, and would like to see more of both.

Consider introducing more case studies with image interpretation and continue the quizzes during tutorials.

Consider reinstating the feed forward sessions to reduce time spent in tutorials discussing written assessment expectations and enable more tailored discussions.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Describe ultrasound assessment of the foetus(s) and maternal pelvis in multiple pregnancies and the third trimester.
  2. Differentiate the aetiology, ultrasound appearance and Doppler haemodynamics of abnormalities during singleton and multiple pregnancies.
  3. Critically evaluate clinical data to communicate a differential diagnosis and consideration of prenatal management of the foetus with a correctable defect.
  4. Evaluate existing and emerging techniques and diagnostic parameters in obstetric imaging.
