MEDS20007 - Advanced Paediatric Ultrasound

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will cover the role of sonography to evaluate conditions to guide the safe management of paediatric patients within an ethical framework of family-centred practice. You will develop knowledge regarding indications for sonographic imaging, advanced sonographic protocols using existing and emerging technology, and how to differentiate between normal and abnormal sonographic appearances. This knowledge will allow you to enhance your advanced sonographic imaging practices related to paediatric patients, interpret sonographic findings and sonographically guide interventions undertaken in the radiology department.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 40%
2. Online Test 60%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Unsolicited email
Feedback
Students found the unit enjoyable and interesting while finding the assessment tasks challenging.
Recommendation
Continue to provide interesting and relevant learning opportunities to challenge the students but consider other options with respect to the assessment tasks.
Action Taken
Interesting and relevant clinical sonographic paediatric cases were discussed in tutorials to keep the tutorials interesting. The assessment task was minimally adapted to allow it to still be challenging but also allow for learning.
Source: SUTE
Feedback
Students asked for exemplars of the written assessment task.
Recommendation
Consider providing exemplars of assessment 1.
Action Taken
Exemplars of assessment 1 were provided to assist students with completion of this assessment task.
Source: SUTE
Feedback
Students requested exemplars of the written assessment task (assessment task 2) to provide a further guide on expectations.
Recommendation
Exemplars of a written assessment task should be provided in future deliveries of a Master level unit of this kind in the new course, CM53 (delivered on the Be Different platform).

Feedback
Students enjoyed the experience of interactive tutorials and found the content very helpful as learning gained was able to be applied in their clinical and professional sonographic practice.
Recommendation
Although this was the final delivery of this unit (which is being replaced by a different unit called Advanced Obstetric and Paediatric sonography (MEDS29001) in a new Master of Medical Ultrasound course, similar tutorials and learning resources should be continued to be utilised in future iterations of this unit to enhance student learning and their learning experience.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate sonographic imaging of the paediatric patient, including normal and abnormal sonographic appearances, and the use of sonographic findings to guide patient management.
  2. Research and evaluate the use of existing and emerging sonographic technology and imaging protocols to investigate the paediatric patient in a safe and ethical manner.
