MEDS29003 - Upper Body Advanced Musculoskeletal Sonography

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is designed to deepen your theoretical knowledge and understanding of the sonographic assessment of upper body musculoskeletal structures. You will learn the detailed relative anatomy of musculoskeletal upper body structures including their dynamic function and pathophysiology, clinical assessment, sonographic techniques required to image structures and associated imaging appearances that may be encountered. You will develop the ability to discriminate between normal and abnormal imaging findings to inform the development of a sonographic report to guide patient management including the performance of ultrasound guided interventional procedures. You will research and critically analyse, synthesise, and evaluate current peer-reviewed literature related to the advanced sonographic assessment of upper body musculoskeletal structures to inform your sonographic practice and enhance patient care. To successfully complete this unit, you will need access to musculoskeletal sonographic examinations in the clinical context.

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 12-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Online Quiz(zes) 50%
2. Written Assessment 50%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the detailed relative anatomy, sonographic techniques and imaging interpretation in advanced upper body sonographic assessments to discriminate between normal and abnormal findings to develop a sonographic report.
  2. Research, evaluate, critically reflect on, and synthesise peer-reviewed literature to inform advanced musculoskeletal sonographic assessment of the upper body.

This Master of Medical Ultrasound course does not lead to entry into the sonography profession but is rather provided to qualified practitioners to allow advanced practice. Therefore, it does not require external accreditation. The Master of Medical Ultrasound qualifies as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity (activity code 10B - Australian Sonographers Accreditation Registry (ASAR)).
