MEDS29004 - Lower Body Advanced Musculoskeletal Sonography

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is designed to advance your knowledge, understanding and clinical practice in the field of musculoskeletal sonography of the lower body. You will learn detailed relative anatomy, sonographic techniques used and how to interpret sonographic images acquired, to inform a sonographic report. You will research and critically evaluate current peer-reviewed literature related to the sonographic assessment of lower body musculoskeletal structures to inform your sonographic practice and enhance patient care. This will include investigating the role of ultrasound in the diagnosis or exclusion of pathologies and/or injuries to guide patient management and the utility of ultrasound guided interventional procedures. To successfully complete this unit, you will need access to musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations in the clinical context.

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 12-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Online Quiz(zes) 50%
2. Written Assessment 50%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the detailed relative anatomy, sonographic techniques and imaging interpretation involved in advanced lower body musculoskeletal sonographic assessments to allow discrimination between normal and abnormal findings to inform the development of a sonographic report.
  2. Research, evaluate, critically reflect on, and synthesise current peer-reviewed literature to inform the clinical practice of advanced sonographic assessment of lower body musculoskeletal structures to aid the exclusion or diagnosis of conditions, guide patient management and enhance patient care.

This unit does not lead to entry into the sonography profession as this is gained by gaining a Graduate Diploma of Medical Ultrasound. It is however, provided to qualified sonographic practitioners to allow them to improve their musculoskeletal sonographic practice. Therefore, it does not require external accreditation. The Master of Medical Ultrasound does qualify as a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity (Activity code 10B) recognised by the Australian Sonographers Accreditation Registry (ASAR).
