MEDS29005 - Advanced Vascular Sonography

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will cover the sonographic assessment of arterial and venous vascular structures including but not limited to those in the neck and extracranial region of the head, abdomen, pelvis, and upper and lower limbs. You will be stepped through standard to advanced sonographic vascular imaging to discuss the vascular relative anatomy, sonographic techniques and pathophysiology. In addition you will learn to discriminate between normal and abnormal sonographic 2D and Doppler haemodynamic imaging findings to inform a diagnosis and develop a sonographic report. You will use this learning to apply within your clinical sonographic practice to enhance patient care.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Online Quiz(zes) 50%
2. Written Assessment 50%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the clinical patient presentation, advanced vascular sonographic techniques, haemodynamic characteristics, normal and abnormal sonographic appearances, differential diagnoses, and resultant imaging findings of vascular structures of the human body.
  2. Research and critically apply the knowledge of evidence-based best practice in the sonographic assessment of vascular structures to inform clinical practice and guide patient management, including the sonographer's professional and ethical obligations.

The Master of Medical Ultrasound course does not lead to entry into the sonography profession but is rather provided to qualified practitioners to allow advanced practice. Therefore, it does not require external accreditation. The Master of Medical Ultrasound qualifies as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity (activity code 10B - Australian Sonographers Accreditation Registry (ASAR)).
