Unit Synopsis

English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP2) introduces students to the essential skills required for study in an academic institution in Australia. At the end of this course, successful students may proceed into either the Direct Entry Academic English course, or an Associate Diploma course. During the EAP2 course, students are given the opportunity to further develop their English language skills, at the same time gaining an understanding of what is required in order to participate fully in tertiary study in Australia.

IELTS 5.0 or equivalent is necessary to enter this program.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. On successful completion of this course, you will, at an introductory level: 1. be familiar with tertiary study requirements in Australia and be able to organize their own learning and manage their own time; 2. have developed an academic writing style and ability to analyse and produce written texts including academic essays and reports; 3. have developed reading comprehension and vocabulary and begun to critically analyse texts; 4. have developed academic listening and note-taking skills needed to participate in university lectures and tutorials; 5. be able to speak confidently in academic situations and produce academic spoken texts; 6. be able to conduct academic research and use referencing procedures; 7. be able to integrate appropriate sources into their written and spoken texts; 8. have improved competency in summarising and paraphrasing when making notes from academic texts; 9. be able to use computer software for assignment preparation and presentation.
