Unit Synopsis

The transition from university to clinical practice is both exciting and challenging. This unit will assist you to prepare for the transition from student to graduate registered nurse. You will explore leadership roles which graduate registered nurses are expected to assume and discuss the skills required to perform these roles. The power differentials and tensions that can exist within healthcare organisations will be explored, including how knowledge of governance systems can support the graduate registered nurse to provide safe patient care within these systems. Finally, you will also prepare for your role transition from student to graduate registered nurse by developing strategies for teamwork, workload management, and care prioritisation.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Students found the workload challenging, particularly having to complete three written assessments.
Recommendation
Unit coordinators will review assessment numbers and types. Weekly 'milestones' are provided on Moodle to encourage students to work on assessment items regularly throughout the term.
Action Taken
In acknowledgment of students' feedback on the challenging workload, specifically regarding three written assessments, adjustments have been made for Term 2, 2023. The unit coordinators have responded by reducing the number of assessments for this term. To further support students in effectively managing their workload, weekly 'milestones' have been introduced on Moodle. These milestones are designed to encourage students to work consistently on assessment items throughout the term, promoting a more balanced and manageable approach to their academic responsibilities.

Students asked for Q&A sessions to be recorded.

Consider recording Q&A sessions.
Action Taken
After consideration it was decided to not record drop in Q&A sessions. These sessions are designed for students to ask questions in a low pressure environment. Weekly tutorials and guest lectures were recorded, all of which allowed time for students to ask questions if desired. Assessment tips and tricks videos were also recorded.

In light of this feedback in the Unit Evaluation, during Term 2, 2023, significant improvements were made to ensure that the assessment criteria are now more transparent and easily understandable for students. This commitment reflects the unit coordinators' proactive approach to addressing concerns and refining the overall assessment process.
