Unit Synopsis

Contemporary national mental health plans emphasise the importance of proactive mental health promotion strategies and interventions that reduce stigma and discrimination for people living with a mental disorder. This unit will allow you to explore mental health promotion within contemporary society. You will be expected to research global and local mental health promotion initiatives and evaluate structures that enhance an organisation's capacity to provide mental health promotion and build resilience.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Assessment tasks - students requested different types of assessments (not just essays).
Recommendation
Introduce varied assessment tasks that include a quiz and practice portfolio.

Term 1 2019 - quizzes and a portfolio were introduced.
Source: Student feedback - students stated they found the task too broad and struggled with finding selective depth. Further they stated having a list of topics would be more helpful.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the connections between prevention, treatment and promotion in mental health care
  2. Discuss a range of mental health promotion strategies clinicians provide within the spectrum of interventions for mental disorders
  3. Evaluate mental health promotion strategies that build resilience and prevent or reduce the impact of mental health issues
  4. Evaluate structures that enhance an organisation's capacity to provide mental health promotion.

This unit is offered in the Graduate Diploma of Mental Health Nursing (CC69). The Graduate Diploma is provisionally accredited by the Australian College of Mental Health Nursing. The College will be notified of these changes. As there are no fundamental changes to the unit, it is unlikely that accreditation will be affected.
