In this unit, you will undertake 6 weeks (30 days) of full-time supervised public health nutrition placement within a government or non-government organisation in the community. On placement, you will apply the theory and the knowledge of evidence-based practice to real-world situations and become skilful in the provision of community-based, public health interventions. The placement experience will allow you to demonstrate competency within the community-based sector. During your placement experience, you will manage projects that address public health nutrition issues. These projects will develop your research, problem-solving, business management and professional skills as you will work through the stages of project planning, implementation, outcome evaluation and synthesise your findings into a final report. You will communicate your findings and then work with stakeholders to improve the health of community members. Consequently, you will improve the health of an at-risk community group through the provision of practical medical nutrition therapy strategies. Throughout this process, you will acquire the skills needed to demonstrate competency in the behaviours required to operate as an independent nutrition and dietetic professional to a level of practice that is deemed suitable for an entry-level dietitian, within a public health setting.
