General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is your second long block professional practice placement and successful completion of these hours will contribute towards your accreditation requirements of completing 1000 professional practice hours. This unit aims to foster a consistent ability to utilise the occupational therapy process when working with clients through integrating and applying academic concepts, professional reasoning and professional behaviours that meet ethical and legal responsibilities within a client centred approach. Professional placements will include a variety of settings and client groups and you may also be required to undertake professional practice placements away from your home town at your own expense. Placement opportunities will vary in start and finish dates and it is important to plan on being available for placement from the end of Term 1 until 31 December of the same year. Additionally, you will participate in research focused seminars, workshops and library activities in small groups, with an academic supervisor linked to this unit. You will complete Part 2 of your Evidence Review in a small group, on a research topic negotiated with your academic supervisor.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 2 - 2019 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 4.2 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 37.5% response rate.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Students have identified that professional practice can be challenging and that having adequate preparation and strategies to manage anxiety, work / life balance and general health are very important.
In addition to the regular student support offered by the unit co-ordinator during placement via telephone, email and zoom the unit co-ordinator will liaise with CQU counselling support services to discuss further developing the pre placement intensive content regarding self care strategies to assist students with maximising their learning opportunities whilst on professional practice.
Action Taken
The pre-placement intensive and unit Moodle page were updated with resources to continue to support students and enhance their self care strategies whilst on professional practice.

The teaching team and students have identified that enhancement of indigenous engagement tools within the pre placement intensive would be beneficial.
Liaise with CQU Indigenous Engagement Team and CB84 teaching team to further enhance the indigenous engagement tools of the unit's Moodle resources focusing on Aboriginal health needs and outcomes.
Action Taken
Student resources supporting indigenous engagement and focusing on Aboriginal health needs and outcomes have been enhanced within the unit Moodle page.

Students have highlighted that they continue to find managing the challenges of work integrated learning and the evidence review assessment difficult.
It is recommended that the current resources are continued to support student prepartation and self care strategies within the pre-placement intensive and the unit Moodle page. A specific focus will be on students having documented five strategies they will implement during their work intergrated learning to assist with managing anxiety, fatigue and stress.

  4. Maintain an e-portfolio which contains descriptions of critical learning experiences during professional practice and additional analysis of learning seminar topics
  5. Demonstrate skills in preparing an Evidence Review related to a specific area of professional practice.

The inclusion of an Evidence Review (completed in two parts) assists us to meet external accreditation requirements as students are required to learn and apply research and EBP skills across the curriculum.
