OCCT14004 - Developing Occupation-Centred Community Programs

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This capstone unit will prepare you to use your emerging occupational therapy skills and knowledge to conduct a needs analysis and then design, implement and evaluate programs that will address the complex needs of clients in a community setting. You will work in a small group using an occupational justice lens to complete a unique workplace project identified by local stakeholders. Supervision and mentoring will be provided by academic staff in collaboration with selected community-based organisations. You will undertake a minimum of 150 hours of Work Integrated Learning during this unit. Your stakeholder focused workplace project will generate information that forms the basis of an industry standard conference presentation and written report, utilising the graduate level professional skills you have developed throughout your course of study in occupational therapy.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 30%
2. Presentation 30%
3. Workplace Project 40%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Have Your Say
Feedback
Students perceived that the workload for each project was not equal across campuses.
Recommendation
It is recommended that students are informed that project tasks may vary between locations, that the workload for each project continues to be monitored by the Unit coordinator and will take into account the number of team members as well as the expected timeframe for completion.
Action Taken
Students were made aware that the size of their team influenced project scoping so that both smaller teams and larger teams had appropriate workload expectations. Teams were supported by the unit coordinator to manage community partner expectations, especially if desired tasks were not achievable within the project timeframe.

Feedback
Assessment due dates need review: submission of the final report prior to the conference presentation was considered preferable by students, while also enabling more timely marking.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the conference presentation becomes the last assessment task in OCCT14004.
Action Taken
The graduate conference and team presentation was scheduled as the final assessment task.

Feedback
Use of Microsoft Teams was useful for organising and communicating. There is a need to ensure group documents are not lost or accessible to other students.
Recommendation
It is recommended that discussion with IT services occur to determine what solutions are available for document integrity and retention in Microsoft Teams.
Action Taken
Microsoft Teams was set up with private groups so that student team members could only access their own content.

Feedback
Clarity about conference planning tasks is required.
Recommendation
It is recommended that students are provided with a list of duties required for each conference planning task, and that the criteria for marking is highlighted to students.
Action Taken
Students were provided with previous years documents detailing each conference planning task. Allocated tasks were discussed every week in class and examples were provided of student performance for each level of marking criteria.
