General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will prepare you for clinical practice in Oral Health Therapy. You will continue to develop your knowledge, skills and attitudes required for clinical work in oral health clinics and health promotion activities in the community. You must comply with clinical policies and procedures while undertaking clinical practice. You will be able to communicate information regarding oral health in a culturally sensitive manner in oral and written forms utilising appropriate interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback:
 The learning materials were hard to navigate. There were multiple textbooks on the prescribed reading list but no chapter readings for each week to assist in understanding the learning materials

Recommendation:
 It is recommended learning materials be reviewed.

Action Taken:
 The simulation laboratory weekly learning material content was reviewed and enhanced with the goal of improving readability and the student experience. Clearer direction is now given to the prescribed textbooks.

Feedback:
 Providing videos of supervisor demonstrations taken by students in the simulation laboratory during the weeks when the instrument was introduced would have been more beneficial.

Recommendation:
 It is recommended to review the alignment of resources to content.

Action Taken:
 Additional demonstration videos have been added in a devoted Moodle tile. A project is currently underway to record new demonstration videos for this unit.

Feedback:
 The two end-of-term exams should be changed to mid-term and end-of-term. This will spread the load across the term.

Recommendation:
 It is recommended the assessment timing be reviewed.

Action Taken:
 The first written exam (In-Class Test A) was held in week 7 and the second (In-Class Test B) in Exam Week 2.

Feedback:
 It would help students to have more clear learning outcomes for each aspect of the unit, especially SIM material.

 It is recommended the description and location of the learning outcomes be reviewed.

 There is a lot of content in this subject although it is necessary the number of assessments each week were difficult to manage with the combined workload from other subjects.

Feedback:
 The teaching team fostered growth, acknowledged achievements, and maintained an open approach to questions. The students felt well-prepared for upcoming clinical experiences and valued the placements for the practical insight they provided.

Recommendation:
 It is recommended clinic placements continue as a requirement of this unit.

Unit Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the theoretical basis of oral health practice including patient assessment and clinical examination, further investigations and the diagnosis and management of periodontal diseases
  2. Undertake duties while complying with the principles of infection control, workplace health and safety, record management and practice management
  3. Demonstrate an ability to collect information for patient assessment
  4. Perform clinical skills in dental procedures including examination, further investigations and dental hygiene procedures in the simulated and clinical environments
  5. Demonstrate appropriate oral and written communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours as required of an oral health therapist.

The learning outcomes of this unit are part of the overall learning outcomes in the BOralHlth course at CQUniversity. They will form part of the annual report documentation which is submitted to the Australian Dental Council for accreditation.
