ORAL11006 - Introduction to Oral Health Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will prepare you for clinical practice in Oral Health Therapy. You will continue to develop your knowledge, skills and attitudes required for clinical work in oral health clinics and health promotion activities in the community. You must comply with clinical policies and procedures while undertaking clinical practice. You will be able to communicate information regarding oral health in a culturally sensitive manner in oral and written forms utilising appropriate interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 2 - 2023 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 91.67% (`Agree` and `Strongly Agree` responses), based on a 57.14% response rate.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Students felt there was too much summative assessment and not enough feedback/formative assessment in the pass/fail portfolio.
Recommendation
It is recommended to re-evaluate the summative and formative assessments. In addition, it is recommended to explain to students that as this is a practical assessment piece, there are multiple artefacts that combine into the portfolio.
Action Taken
The number of summative practical sessions was decreased for 2023 and replaced by formative practical assessments. Students were briefed at the beginning of the term as to the assessment requirements and provided with a timetable detailing due dates.

Feedback
Students suggested reducing the number and/or time of clinical placement sessions.
Recommendation
It is recommended to reduce the number and/or time of clinical placement sessions.
Action Taken
The number of clinical placement sessions has been reduced from 6 in 2022 to 3 in 2023.

Feedback
Students suggested more of a tutorial style session at the beginning of practical classes to consolidate theory before moving to practical skills.

It is recommended to integrate a tutorial style session at the beginning of practical classes to consolidate theory before moving to practical skills.
Action Taken
Students are provided with a demonstration of clinical skills at the start of each session. Students are also provided with a step-by-step outline of each pre-clinical session that includes techniques, material and medicament descriptions and links to any relevant instructional videos or additional material.

Feedback
SIM session weekly content can be difficult to follow and needs updating.
Recommendation
It is recommended to review and further update the SIM weekly content to improve student engagement and contribute to the student learning experience.

Feedback
Students indicated that the vital signs lesson needs to be more specific to Oral Health students.
Recommendation
It is recommended to review the Vital Signs pre-clinical session with a Nursing SME to ensure it is relevant to OHT clinical practice, and to conduct the pre-clinical practical training in this area as a joint initiative.

In 2023 additional communication modules, including clinical role-playing, were introduced. Feedback indicates students enjoyed these sessions.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the theoretical basis of oral health practice including patient assessment and clinical examination, further investigations and the diagnosis and management of periodontal diseases
  2. Undertake duties while complying with the principles of infection control, workplace health and safety, record management and practice management
  3. Demonstrate an ability to collect information for patient assessment
  4. Perform clinical skills in dental procedures including examination, further investigations and dental hygiene procedures in the simulated and clinical environments
  5. Demonstrate appropriate oral and written communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours as required of an oral health therapist.

The learning outcomes of this unit are part of the overall learning outcomes in the BOralHlth course at CQUniversity. They will form part of the annual report documentation which is submitted to the Australian Dental Council for accreditation.
