Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will study the current approaches to periodontics, orthodontics, and prosthodontics used by oral health therapists. You will translate and integrate this knowledge into skills throughout pre-clinical practice. On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to demonstrate clinical judgment and practical skills in periodontics, including implant maintenance, orthodontics, and prosthodontics. You will be knowledgeable on your role in intra- and inter-professional practice and will be able to communicate information in oral and written forms utilising appropriate interpersonal and team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.

Pre-requisite: ORAL12001 Oral Disease Prevention and Management, ORAL12002 Oral Health Pre Clinical Practice 1  and ORAL12003 Oral Health Clinical Practice 1.

Co-requisite: ORAL12005 Paediatric Dentistry for the Oral Health Therapist and ORAL12006 Oral Health Clinical Practice 2.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Students found the orthodontic content was a large component of the unit and the prosthodontic and pharmacology was an afterthought.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit content undergo a review and restructure prior to Term 2, 2023.
Action Taken
The unit content underwent significant review and restructure for 2023. The orthodontic content was reviewed with some content moved to the third year clinical practice unit. The pharmacology component was moved to a different unit.

Feedback
Face to face lectures would be preferred over the pre-recorded lectures.
Recommendation
It is recommended face to face lectures be incorporated in 2023. The recorded lectures could be made available for the students as a complementary learning resource.

With the exception of orthodontic theory, the lectures were delivered face to face.

The prosthodontic and orthodontic intensive was well structured and allowed students to demonstrate technical skills.

It is recommended the prosthodontic and orthodontic practical component be continued in 2023.

Feedback
Students enjoyed the orthodontic and prosthodontic intensive mid-term. However, some orthodontic practical sessions were rushed.
Recommendation
It is recommended to deliver the practical component of orthodontics and prosthodontics in this format with a review of timings.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Describe classes of malocclusion, treatment options and explain the reasons necessitating orthodontic treatment
  2. Discuss the role of the oral health therapist within general practice, specialist practice and inter-professional practice
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in clinical and laboratory procedures for prosthodontic and orthodontic procedures within the scope of an oral health therapist
  4. Manage non-surgical treatment of diseases and conditions of the periodontium and supporting tissues of the teeth or their replacements
  5. Advocate for, and promote, oral health to individuals and groups across diverse community settings in a variety of formats
  6. Recognise and act upon the legal, ethical and safeguarding issues involving dental practitioners and patients as defined by the relevant professional regulatory bodies in Australia and overseas
