PODI13011 - Podiatry Clinical Practice 3

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The students will work within a multidisciplinary team, focusing on holistic case management. They will continue to assess, diagnose and manage a range of clients with pathology and will be expected to be able to present clinical cases and explain the underlying pathophysiology and their clinical reasoning with respect to assessment, diagnosis and management. As a matter of continuous development, students will be expected to advance their professional skills including practice management, communication skills, and generic health professional skills. Students will now dispense lower extremity orthotic devices in the management of the patient.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Students identified that the format of the lecture slide handouts needed to be in grey scale and to have more display options.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator provides future lecture slides in grey scale and in both one slide per page and three slides per page handout options to the students.
Action Taken
Slides were provided in PDF version to students. Students could choose the format to print out their slides.

Feedback
Students reported that the format of the lectures and the content covered was very helpful to their ability to successfully complete the first assignment related to their honours.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator continues to provide lectures which step the students through conducting their first research project.

Lectures were designed to step students through their research project planning and development.

Feedback
Students experienced some difficulty in navigating the newly formatted Moodle page.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the lecturer talk students through the new Moodle page format to allow students to better navigate the Moodle site. .
Action Taken
The Moodle site was simplified which allowed easy intuitive navigation.

Students felt that the lecturer broke down tasks into a 'step-by-step' process which made assessment task completion (preparing an ethics application) very easy to complete.
Recommendation
Students generally find research daunting. It is recommended that all tasks be broken down step by step with exemplars to assist students with the research process.

Lecturer handled the COVID situation very well, and moved all lectures online smoothly. Students also appreciated that there were recorded lectures so they could review content at their own pace.
Recommendation
It is recommended that students continue to be provided with recorded lectures so that students can review lecture content at their own pace.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced professional and ethical behaviours including communication skills, accurate documentation and team work within a multidisciplinary team.
  2. Integrate evidence-based practice into clinical decision-making processes.
  3. Conduct and analyse a safe and thorough patient assessment.
  4. Implement evidence based, goal orientated management plans for foot related problems accounting for the physical, social and emotional impacts of the presenting case.
  5. Select and correctly apply therapeutic and preventative interventions based on the assessment findings, including orthotic and footwear therapy, physical therapies, exercise prescription and rehabilitation programs, manual and pharmacological interventions.
  6. Determine the needs of local communities and contribute to health education as appropriate.
