PSYC20054 - Psychopathology and Formulation I

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is the first of two units which focus on mental disorders across the lifespan and case formulation. In this unit you will explore mental disorders most prevalent in childhood and adolescence. A problem-based learning approach will be used, providing you with the opportunity to engage in self-reflective practice and synthesise your knowledge and application of mental disorder classification, diagnosis, and case formulation. The study of mental disorders will involve exploration of genetic, biological, psychological, and social factors. The role of these factors will be considered in the development of mental disorders and possible intervention pathways. You will employ professional communication skills in a socially and culturally responsive manner to present your case formulations. This unit will include a three day residential in the first week of term which is compulsory for all students to attend.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Students stated that they felt like the unit could benefit from inter-unit collaboration regarding the use of formulation to inform psychometric assessment and intervention planning.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the teaching team review the teaching schedule to strengthen the flow of content between units.

Feedback
Students stated that they were unsure if the inclusion of a test (Assessment 3) was really required for this unit.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the teaching team review Assessment 3 to ensure the use of a test is the most appropriate assessment modality for the aligned learning outcomes.
Action Taken
The teaching team reviewed Assessment 3 to ensure that it was the most appropriate modality to assess the aligned learning outcomes. The outcome of the review was that the test would be retained. To ensure students understood the rationale behind the chosen assessment modality for Assessment 3, the Unit Coordinator shared the rationale behind the chosen assessment modality during the assessment brief in Week 1.

Feedback
Students stated that they found it uncomfortable and challenging having to manage the time limit for the in-class presentations themselves.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the teaching team provide students with strategies to assist them in managing their adherence to the time limit during their in-class presentations.

After broader assessment discussions with the teaching team, in-class presentations were removed.
