Unit Synopsis

This unit is intended to provide you with advanced knowledge in health psychology, behavioural medicine, and rehabilitation practice necessary for working as a Clinical Psychologist. The unit aims to build your competency in assessment, treatment planning and intervention for health-related issues within clinical psychology practice, using a culturally-responsive reflective practice approach.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Suggestion to request university funding in order to support guest lecturers considered to be 'experts' in different areas of Health Psychology.
Recommendation
If budget requirements permit, funding support for guest lecturer/s is best directed in the first instance toward employing the skills and expertise of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who work within the Health Psychology space. The need for sourcing funding for further external teaching contributions would only be warranted if knowledge and skill in a particular area of Health psychology within internal teaching staff was insufficient to meet student course requirement demands. To enhance student engagement and build local community relationships, where appropriate, invitations might be extended to local practitioners to share real-world insights as relevant to a particular topic within the Health Psychology unit.
Action Taken
in 2020 the lecture delivery was shared by three academic staff at CQU, with each of the staff teaching to their areas of interest. This provided students with greater variety of teaching style.

Suggestion to change the due-date of the Manual (Assessment task 3) as it falls close to the thesis due date. A proposed solution is to swap due dates for Assessment 2 and Assessment 3.
Recommendation
Some consideration to be given to due dates of assessment tasks; however, the current configuration of assessment task order is deemed most appropriate for optimal learning outcomes in this unit. Further, meeting competing tasks demands and developing competency in self-management are learning outcomes and graduate attributes required for practicing in field of clinical psychology. The self-paced nature of both the thesis and Assessment Task 3 provides student with opportunity to plan accordingly and meet task requirements in a timely fashion.

The due date for Assessment 3 was adjusted so that it was not due in the same week as the thesis.

Request for lecture notes and additional reading material to be made available to students at least one-week in advance.
Recommendation
Where feasible lecture material and additional resources will be made available to students at the beginning of term; however, it is noted that these may be updated in the week prior to delivery if additional important information or updates become available in the interim. This will ensure students are receiving recent and relevant evidence-based knowledge in their teaching and learning.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate and adapt biopsychosocial models of health for person-centred and culturally responsive evidenced-based practice
  2. Demonstrate clinical skills and reflective practice in evidence-based health behaviour change interventions including motivational interviewing and relapse prevention
  3. Critically appraise and integrate recent and relevant literature into clinical practice specific to health psychology and rehabilitation in oral and written format.

These learning outcomes are intended to link with the CG17 Master of Clinical Psychology course Learning Outcome "Apply advanced knowledge of psychological, developmental, and biopsychosocial models of health, with consideration of culturally and linguistically diverse populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples" (Learning Outcome number 2).

The PSYC22002 Learning Outcomes align with the 2019 Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accreditation guidelines for Level 4 Graduate Competencies (4.2.1.i, 4.2.1.ii, 4.2.2.i, 4.2.3.i, 4.2.3.iii,and 4.2.3.iv.), which are specific to culturally responsive biopsychosocial models of health and health rehabilitation in clinical psychology.
