SOWK14005 - Advanced Clinical Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course facitilates students critical evaluation of several clinical therapeutic models and their relevancy and practical application for social work practice. Students should acquire ability to distinguish clinical practice skills and techniques associated with these models. Students should be able to display clinical practice skills in the use of at least one of these therapuetic approaches and demonstrate ability to critically evaluate their clinical practice.

SOWK13011 Community Practice and SOWK13009 Field education 1. OR SOWK19016 Social Work Theory & Practice 3A and SOWK19017 Social Work Theory & Practice 3B and SOWK13002 Field Education and Fieldwork 1.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Students enjoyed the opportunity to engage in the residential school via Zoom or face to face in response to COVID-19 issues.
Recommendation
The attendance adjustments were AASW (Australian Association of Social Workers) approved and only for the duration of the COVID-19 health and travel restrictions.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast different clinical therapeutic models and their theoretical and practical application to social work practice.
  2. Critically evaluate the relative merits and limitations of chosen therapuetic models within the relevant practice context.
  3. Critically evaluate skills and approaches for different cultural contexts including working in Indigenous contexts.
  4. Display ability to apply a range of clinical skills and the chosen therapeutic approach to direct clinical practice.
  5. Critically reflect on application of clinical practice skills and the limitations and potential in applying the chosen therapeutic approach in direct practice.
  6. Critcally evaluate direct clinical practice using a narrative reflective approach.
