SPCH14002 - Honours Research Practicum 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

You will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct research and implement evidence-based practice within the field of speech pathology. In this unit, you will work alongside an experienced researcher and/or clinician to identify a research question related to speech pathology. Using ethical standards, you will design a research project that considers cultural and practical implications of implementation. You will learn how to critically appraise literature and will be guided through methods of data collection and data analysis.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
It would be useful to have pre-recorded lectures to watch online in students' own time.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator explores the potential of using pre-recorded lectures in the 2020 offering of this unit.
Action Taken
Due to COVID-19, this unit was moved online in Week 3 of term with the inclusion of recorded lectures.

Feedback
The tutorials were beneficial to student learning and progressing research projects and systematic reviews.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the weekly face-to-face tutorials continue in 2020. These tutorials allow students to unpack the content learned in lecture and apply that content to their own research questions.
Action Taken
The weekly face-to-face tutorials continued via Zoom throughout the term to allow students to apply concepts learned in lecture to their own research projects.

Feedback
Students would prefer to have handouts of powerpoints be provided with a maximum of two slides per page rather than three.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator ask students their preference at the start of term since previous cohorts have preferred three slides per page because of the increased writing space.
Action Taken
The lecture slides were posted in two different formats to accommodate different student preferences.

  1. Design a research project using evidence-based practice principles in speech pathology
  2. Critically appraise literature on a topic specific to speech pathology
  3. Identify and explain ethical issues in studies and consider the cultural and practical implications of implementation in speech pathology
  4. Assimilate and communicate insights gained from quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis.
