Course Summary

The Diploma of Crime and Justice Studies is the ideal course to provide you with the skills and knowledge to launch your career in a range of justice and/or law enforcement fields. The course will provide you with a thorough understanding in justice-related areas including reading and interpreting legislation, social justice, crime and punishment, ethics in the public sector, interviewing, evidence law and investigation.


Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements, however, it is beneficial for those seeking entry into the Diploma satisfy at least one of the below: • successful completion of a Certificate IV in Crime and Justice Studies; or • successful completion of a Certificate IV qualification; or • completion of Year 12 or equivalent with a sound achievement in English; or • relevant work or life experience in the business or justice fields.


VET Student Loan Information

VET Student Loans may be available for eligible students in approved Diploma level qualifications. The loan can be used towards Tuition Fees only and does not cover additional expenses such as textbooks, uniforms, equipment, travel, tools, and accommodation or general living expenses. Loan limits or caps may apply for some eligible courses and where a loan limit is reached for a course, students may be required to pay upfront for any remaining units.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

The purpose of this course is to provide learners with the specialised skills and knowledge required to perform as para-professionals in legal and justice-related administrative or managerial roles including youth justice roles, police officer (state or federal), corrections officer, paralegal, court services officer, customers officer or private investigations. 

Course Structures

In order to complete this course, you must:

  1. Complete 12 core units
  2. Complete 2 elective units

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Standard Course Structure

Learners have a finish date for individual units but may complete their training sooner if they have reached the required skill level. As most students will undertake this distance program on a part-time basis, the duration for the full qualification will vary. The course can typically be completed in 18-24 months, based on approximately 1,800 hours of learning.

Please note that the study period for individual units is 10 weeks (except for the cluster units which are detailed below). If you wish to enrol in more than one unit for an intake you will have 10 weeks to complete those units. Unless specified otherwise (ie. Stage 4 and 8), it is recommended students only enrol in one unit at a time,

NOTE: This course include contains clustered stages. Clustered stages contain assessment that runs across all units. Therefore all units within a clustered stage must be enrolled into simultaneously.

Stage 4 Cluster - CJSSJI403 and BSBRES411 must be enrolled into at the same time (16 weeks duration)

Stage 8 Cluster – PSPINV001, PSPINV002 and PSPINV00 must be enrolled into at the same time (20 weeks duration)

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.
