Welding the Gap is structured for the advancement of the fitting and machining trade to gain the basic skills of welding and thermal cutting. MEM05012 Perform routine manual metal arc welding process - this unit applies in a maintenance or manufacturing environment where the welding is not required to meet an Australian Standard or equivalent. Fillet and butt welds would typically be performed on low carbon/mild steels. A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must be able to prepare materials and carry out routine manual metal arc welding (MMAW). MEM05050 Perform routine gas metal arc welding process - this unit applies in a maintenance or manufacturing environment where the welding is not required to meet an Australian Standard or equivalent. Fillet and butt welds would typically be performed on low carbon/mild steels. A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must be able to prepare materials and carry out routine gas metal arc welding (GMAW). MEM05007 Perform manual heating and thermal cutting - this unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to perform manual heating, thermal cutting and gouging including the assembly and disassembly and operation of the equipment on a range of materials.
All students who request to be enrolled into the three selected units, MEM05007, MEM05012 and MEM05050, must have completed the required pre-requisites to be allowed entry into the the course. The pre-requisites would have been completed through the duration of their apprenticeship. For eg: Block A/ B of MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical/ Machining/ Fitting and Turning. Approval by HOC.
