Course Summary

This qualification reflects the role of an education support worker who assists teachers and supports student learning in a range of classroom settings in primary or secondary schools, as defined by State/Territory legislation. Work requires the use of discretion and judgement within the boundaries of established policies and procedures and complete general administrative as well as operational tasks to support students. To achieve this qualification, students must have completed a total of at least 100 hours of work in a classroom environment catering to primary or secondary school students, within at least one school in Australia.  The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

The requirement to complete the Vocational Placement component for the duration of the qualification of at least 100 hours in a classroom environment within Primary or Secondary Schools.

The requirement to successfully obtain a Working With Children Check relevant to your state in Australia.

Additional information

The course is organised to reflect the learning and work activities that take place within a school environment, with a mandatory work placement of 100 hours at either Primary or Secondary Schools.

Within this time allocation, students can demonstrate the required vocational placement tasks and skills for other units as required for the qualification.

Students may be required to complete additional hours of Vocational Placement, to what is listed on the training package, to achieve this qualification, which is inclusive of the 100 hours required for units CHCEDS034 and CHCEDS035.

Units CHCEDS034 and CHCEDS035 have mandatory work placement of 100 hours for each unit. To assist students to meet this requirement we have clustered these units together, as the total number of 100 hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirements of workplace hours within this qualification.

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

*All study modes may include Vocational placement and/or work integrated learning.
