Course Summary

This qualification provides an introduction to the construction industry, its culture, occupations, job roles and workplace expectations. The units of competency cover essential work health and safety requirements, the industrial and work organisation structure, communication skills, work planning, and basic use of tools and materials. The qualification is built around a basic construction project unit that integrates the skills and embeds the facets of employability skills in context. The qualification is suited to Start TAFE Now (STN) programs or learners with no previous connection to the construction industry or relevant employment history.

Requirements - To Be Eligible

For your application to be considered, you must meet the following entry requirements.

Entry Requirements

Completion of the BKSB (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy, numeracy and digital literacy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course.

Start TAFE Now students must be in Year 11 or Year 12.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

Apprenticeship within construction industry, including: Bricklayer or Blocklayer, Ceiling or wall plasterer, Carpenter, Joiner, Painter decorator, Roof tiler, Shopfitter, Solid plasterer, Stonemason.

Students will complete the unit CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry as part of this course. Successful completion of this unit allows students to apply for the General Construction Induction Training - GCIT (White Card), which is essential for working on construction sites.  To apply for the General Construction Induction Training (GCIT) card, students must meet identity and evidence requirements set by WorkSafe Queensland. Up-to-date information on these requirements can be found at worksafe.qld.gov.au by searching “Evidence of Identity”.
