HLT52015 - Diploma of Remedial Massage

Course Details

Course Summary

This qualification reflects the role of remedial massage therapists who work with clients presenting with soft tissue dysfunction, musculoskeletal imbalance or restrictions in range of motion (ROM). Practitioners may be self-employed or work within a larger health service.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 200 hours of work. Please see the More Details tab for further information.

Entry Requirements

Students must be 16 years of age to enrol and have written consent from parents or guardians to be treated by fellow class members.

Vocational Placement and Work Integrated Learning

Students must complete a Vocational Placement and/or Work Integrated Learning as part of this qualification.

Additional information

200 hours of work is required within the supervised CQUniversity clinics.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

Students graduate with a Diploma of Remedial Massage which will enable them to register with health funds to provide remedial massage therapy throughout Australia. Massage Therapists can work in private practice, day spas, hotels, sporting teams, aged care or integrate their practice with other allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors.

Course Structures

In order to complete this course, you must:

  1. Complete 16 core units
  2. Complete 5 elective units

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.

Intensive Internal Workshops (IIW)

Student requirements for each IIW are as follows:

  • Full clinic uniform to be worn at all times
  • Arrival 15 minutes prior to class starting
  • Enclosed footwear must be worn
  • Hair must be tied back neatly
  • Therapist presentation standards of make-up, manicured nails, strict personal hygiene
  • Textbook/access to e-book
  • Writing materials - including pens/paper
  • Laptop/tablet for note taking

Block clinic training, one week per month, 10 months of the year:

  • Monday 1.00pm - 6.00pm
  • Tuesday to Thursday 8.30am - 6.00pm
  • Friday 8.30am - 4.00pm

Full attendance is for all days is a strict requirement and non-negotiable for each block of Internal Intensive Workshops (IIWs) unless previous discussion with the teacher. 

Block clinic training:

·         2 weeks/month by 1 ½ days per week (Monday & Wednesday)

·         1 week/month of 2 ½ days per week (Extra day for theory)

·         All Mondays are from 1pm to 6pm

·         All Wednesdays are from 9am to 6pm

·         1 theory day per month 9 am to 4pm

VET Student Loan Information

VET Student Loans may be available for eligible students in approved Diploma level qualifications. The loan can be used towards Tuition Fees only and does not cover additional expenses such as textbooks, uniforms, equipment, travel, tools, and accommodation or general living expenses. Loan limits or caps may apply for some eligible courses and where a loan limit is reached for a course, students may be required to pay upfront for any remaining units.

What is the BKSB?

The Basic Knowledge and Skills Builder is an online pre-enrolment assessment to match the qualification level in which you will achieve the best chance of success.  Diploma students must receive a level four in both literacy and numeracy to be eligible to access Vet Student Loan. 


Can I resit the BKSB?

You can resit the BKSB two weeks after your first sitting. Meanwhile there is an online workbook to work through before you are able to resit. 


Will I get help with literacy and numeracy skills?

Contact our Student Success Team on 13 27 86 who will refer you to the literacy and numeracy support team. 


When can I have a look at my unit on Moodle?

As soon as you are enrolled in a unit you are able to login into Moodle and start viewing the following in each unit’s page:

- Recordings,

- YouTube clips,

- Textbook readings,

- Power Points,

- Product information,

- The written and practical assessments, 

- MSDS sheets,

- Procedures, 

- Zoom recordings, 

- And much more. 


How do I log into Moodle?

User name: 1023456 (your student number)

Password: Default password is found in your welcome email. 


What do I wear to class?

Whilst on-campus, students are required to adhere to the following uniform requirements: 

  • A black polo shirt that is embroidered with 'Remedial Massage' (available from the CQU Bookshop for approximately $35) 
  • Black full-length pants (not leggings or jeans).
  • Black enclosed shoes.  Choose black joggers or supportive shoes, do not wear ballet flats or heels.
  • Tidy hair, with long hair secured.
  • No artificial nails, cut short with minimal jewellery.  No rings.
  • No midriffs showing.

Due to Workplace Health and Safety guidelines, you will not be able to participate in practical activities if you uniform and/or hands are not clean and in satisfactory condition.  Uniforms are available for purchase from the CQUni Bookshop.  


What are the times I have to be in class?

8.30am to 4.00/4.30pm. 

If you are unable to attend, have to leave early or arrive late, please phone or email your teacher ahead of time, as quite often a student clinic will be operating and you will have clients booked for the day. 


Do I have to attend for each timetabled day on campus?

Yes. Your teacher’s role is to prepare you for working in a massage clinic, physiotherapy, chiropractic or osteopathic clinic, beauty salon, spa or to run your own remedial massage business.  Therefore you will need to attend for the full day on campus so you can observe, practice and be assessed in the many practical skills of your massage course. 


Can I catch up on missed days?

Each day on campus is valuable time to learn new techniques, practice and participate in the simulated salon environment. Therefore it is very important to attend each day on your timetable.  Teachers will endeavour to schedule catch up classes but this is done on a case by case basis and not guaranteed to be available. 


Do I have to find my own clients?

Your training salon has a client base however students may need to source their own clients from time to time. It is a good idea to network with your family and friends who can become your clients in our busy training salons.
 

It is each student’s responsibility to ensure that a model is obtained and booked into the appointment book for all Practical Assessments. Students must be prepared to provide treatments to clients.


What kind of assessments will I have to do?

Each unit will has several practical assessments and a written assessment. A timetable is provided that identifies when each assessment is due.
