Course Summary

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a wide range of general information and communications technology (ICT) technical functions and to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency as an advanced ICT user. Persons working at this level will support information technology activities in the workplace across a wide range of ICT areas, including technical support, network administration, web technologies, software applications and digital media technologies.


Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course, however completion of Certificate II in Information, Digital Media & Technology is highly recommended.

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.

Enrolment Information

This course has been superseded by a new version of the qualification - ICT30120. For this reason, it has been placed in Teach Out.  This means that one final opportunity is being provided to students who have nearly completed the qualification to finish their remaining units before the end of 2021. Students who have not completed all units required for this qualification will have to transition to the new qualification.


New students will be admitted in February and April Intakes but will then transition to the new qualification mid-year.


Compulsory Attendance

Students studying the System Build and Test cluster, Small Business Networking cluster and Large Business Networking cluster must be able to attend compulsory Lab sessions one day per week for the duration of the enrolment period which is usually 8 or 9 weeks.


Expected Attendance

Students studying the Foundation Skills or Business Practices clusters are expected to attend a one hour weekly Zoom session for each unit. These blocks generally have a duration of 8 – 9 weeks.


Study Load

This course requires a considerable commitment to complete.


Full-time study (2 or 3 clusters each block):  30+ hours per week of study is required to complete all units successfully. 


Part-time study (One cluster each Block):  Completing all units successfully will require 10-15 hours of study per week. 


Start Month

Cluster 1 – One day per week in IT Lab  plus a weekly online Zoom lesson

Cluster 2 – Done mostly online with a weekly online Zoom lesson for each unit
