MSL20122 - Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement

Version Effective: 18th of June, 2025
Course Details

Course Summary

This qualification reflects the role of workers who perform a range of sampling and measurement activities as part of laboratory, production or field operations in the construction, manufacturing, resources and environmental industry sectors. Job roles include samplers and testers, production personnel, plant operators, production operators, field assistants, drivers and sample couriers.

Samplers and testers conduct limited sampling and testing as part of their duties in a particular industry. They use a restricted range of skills and operational knowledge to perform tasks and do not generally work inside a laboratory.

They:

  • follow set procedures to sample raw materials and products
  • may package, label, store and transport samples
  • use simple equipment (hydrometers, thermometers and pH meters) to make measurements and perform basic tests that take a short time and involve a narrow range of variables and easily recognised control limits
  • may make visual inspection of products and packaging.

In some industry sectors (for example, mineral assay) this work forms a whole job role.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Compulsory Attendance - Residential Schools

Attending the one (1) day residential school (practical block) held on a CQUniversity campus offering the qualification, is MANDATORY for all students in this course. The residential school is designed for students to complete the practical components of all the units in the course. Providing students satisfactorily complete all the practical components during the residential school, students are only required to attend one residential school.

The date(s) for the residential school will be confirmed through collaboration between the school and CQUniversity. Students will be notified well in advance to allow adequate time for preparation and coordination of required resources.

Please note that the residential school will take place outdoors. As such, all students are expected to wear sun-safe clothing and enclosed footwear to ensure safety and comfort during activities.

Requirements for your attendance at the practical week:

  • You MUST enrol into all of the course units as outlined in the course planner, prior to attendance at the residential school.
  • You MUST read your unit's Learning Guide and assessment material prior to attending the residential school sessions.

What do you need to bring with you?

  • You MUST wear fully enclosed shoes at all times.
  • Your PPE such as sun safe hat, water bottle and sunscreen.
  • Permanent fine tip pen to write on glassware during your practical class.
  • Ensure you have access to the relevant learning materials (printed copies) e.g. Laboratory Manual, practical assessments, observation check sheets) with you. See the Moodle unit site for further details.
