Course Summary

Neuromyths are pervasive, and unfortunately, many educators believe them. This micro-credential specifically targets AITSL Standard 1.5, focusing on brain and learning dynamics—especially debunking neuromyths.
Throughout this micro-credential, you’ll gain the skills to identify and dispel common neuromyths—misconceptions about brain function and learning processes. These myths include notions about multiple intelligences, left versus right brain dominance, learning styles, and the myth that we only use 10% of our brains.
Examining the scientific evidence, you will learn to differentiate between fact and fiction and debunk these prevalent neuromyths. Furthermore, based on these myths, we will explore the negative impact of instructional decisions. Neuromyths often contradict our current understanding of how the brain actually learns. You can make informed choices in your teaching practice with your neuroscience knowledge.
Ultimately, this micro-credential aims to empower educators by bridging the gap between popular misconceptions and evidence-based practices, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities of the brain.

Undertaking this micro-credential enables teachers to meet Continuing Professional Development obligations for registration and Initial Teacher Education content requirements. It may contribute to industry update requirements for other professionals and significantly enhance professional practice.

Course Structures

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.
