Course Summary

This online Short Course has been designed to complement the work delivered by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) to focus on developing teacher confidence, capability and expertise in the key concepts and topics covered in the Psychology syllabus. It offers subject-specific knowledge and skills needed to underpin effective and contemporary approaches to teaching and learning in the subject.

This course will expand on the understanding of psychological experimental designs and their application. These will be explored through the measurements and assessment of intelligence, highlighting issues of validity and reliability. The participant will learn about brain structure and function, brain/cognitive development and the concept of consciousness. This course will apply skills in psychological science, research and critical analysis to these topics. The participant will also examine how the brain determines and influences human behaviour.

The fee for this short course will be $100.00.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to enrol in this short course, however, it is designed for Secondary School teachers who expect to teach the QCAA Psychology General Senior Syllabus.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

This course provides Professional Development for Secondary School teachers in Queensland who would like to complete studies in a flexible and self-paced environment to gain psychology insights to inform teaching practices.

Undertaking this course enables teachers to meet Continuing Professional Development obligations for registration. Upon successful completion of the course, teachers will be awarded 12 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours and a CQUniversity Certificate of Completion.

Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Understand what reliability, validity and standards refer to in a study of intelligence
  2. Acknowledge the evidence underlying scientific claims through application of the scientific method to analyse data and make informed conclusions
  3. Identify how psychological knowledge of human behaviour theorises mal-adaptive or disordered individuals and critically apply the criteria of adaption and mal-adjustment to psychological diagnoses
  4. Apply knowledge of stigma to the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions
  5. Summarise the roles of emotion and motivation in goal attainment.
