Course Summary

This online Short Course has been designed to complement the work delivered by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) to focus on developing teacher confidence, capability and expertise in the key concepts and topics covered in the Food and Nutrition syllabus. It offers subject-specific knowledge and skills needed to underpin effective and contemporary approaches to teaching and learning in the subject.

This course focuses on issues within the nutrition market, experienced particularly by consumers. It provides opportunities to investigate different food components, food solutions and challenges for the food industry. Participants will be provided with opportunities to focus on finding solutions using the problem-based learning (PBL) cycle related to food issues and concerns.

The fee for this short course will be $100.00.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to enrol in this short course, however, it is designed for Secondary School teachers who expect to teach the QCAA Food & Nutrition General Senior Syllabus.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

This course provides Professional Development for Secondary School teachers in Queensland who would like to complete studies in a flexible and self-paced environment to gain food and nutrition insights to inform teaching practices.

Undertaking this course enables teachers to meet Continuing Professional Development obligations for registration. Upon successful completion of the course, teachers will be awarded 12 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours and a CQUniversity Certificate of Completion.

Study Mode Definitions

  • Mixed Mode courses are delivered online and require compulsory attendance of site-specific learning activities such as on-campus residential schools and/or workshops.
  • Online courses are delivered using online resources only.
  • On-campus courses are delivered using a combination of face-to-face and video conferencing style teaching at CQUniversity campuses.

*All study modes may include Vocational placement and/or work integrated learning.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain who the participants are in the nutrition market and analyse and interpret information relating to different consumer markets
  2. Develop strategies to support health by examining a series of real-world problems related to a specific consumer market
  3. Establish a brief scaffold that supports investigation of one of the real-world problems
  4. Link theoretical underpinnings of food science with their applications in practice.
