Course Summary

In this online Short Course, you will examine key principles and concepts relevant to accounting. These concepts are important to learn about, even as a manager or a leader, so that you are able to decipher the financial information available to you. These skills will help you determine whether the business is running at a loss or a profit, the liabilities of the business and whether the business is complying with its legal accounting obligations. Understanding accounting is an essential tool for leaders who need to efficiently and effectively make business decisions. Understanding the financial underpinnings of your business can help you determine what financial activities are, and are not, working at the business. This information will help you to make business decisions and execute changes to the business with the aim of improving operations and increasing profits. To help you understand the basics of accounting, you will learn about the purpose of financial statements and the main types of financial statements and the principles guiding the accounting profession and informing its ethics. Key accounting terminology that is required at an executive level of business and the difference between accrual and cost-based accounting will be outlined.

Students who successfully complete the set of nine Short Courses* developed from the unit BUSN20026 Accounting for Business Decisions, (which forms part of the Master of Business Administration (Leadership) CL39), may be eligible for credit transfer, pending all other entry requirements to the Master of Business Administration (Leadership) CL39 are being met, as automatic entry will not apply.

Course Structures

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

*All study modes may include Vocational placement and/or work integrated learning.
