Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

The focus of Cluster 1 centres around understanding the complexity of inter-related Emergency Management Arrangements and Legislation which forms the foundation for industry activity. This aspect takes time and patience to fully understand the complexities and learning to work and communicate with other agencies and the community. Units are clustered together as interdependent information sources, with the outcomes spanning several units and feed into those which are undertaken in Terms 2 and 3.

Cluster 2
Cluster 2 focus is the journey of inter-agency consultation and collaboration processes. The self directed activities lead to two exercise activities, one a desktop and the second a functional exercise evaluated during the 5 day residential school, aimed at testing systems and processes of emergency management including coordination of resources and managing the transition to recovery.

Cluster 3
Cluster 3 brings together the learnings in Clusters 1 and 2, as students enter into the area of undertaking emergency management planning in linking to managing an organisations public safety responsibilities. Culmination of this cluster reviews the organisational Business Continuity Planning (BCP) in the delivery of organisational functions and services and public safety responsibilities.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.

Residential School Information


Students must attend a five day residential school during Term 2 - Week 15, at a CQUniversity nominated location where learning activities in managing and evaluating emergency operation management exercises is undertaken.  


During the five-day residential school, students be exposed to a scenario that replicates activities they could undertake during an actual disaster event. The residential covers activation of an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), escalation of the event including transition to the next operational level, then undertake a transition to recovery after the event has passed. Students will review potential recovery functions and services identifying with stakeholders potential strategies that enable the community to return to a normal stance after an incident or event within a self-managed group. 


Travel, accommodation and meals are to be met by the individual student. It is estimated the residential to be approximately $2,500.  


Residential School details will be provided to students by teaching staff.  


Diploma and Advanced Diploma Combined Program

 

PUA52312 Diploma of Public Safety (Emergency Management) and PUA60112 Advanced Diploma of Public Safety (Emergency Management) combined are an integrated and blended professional development program, structured to enable new entrants and existing practitioners the opportunity to enhance their skills, capability and competencies in this specialised field of emergency management.

 

The Diploma is designed to support integrated action learning in the broad range of core elements of emergency management. The Advanced Diploma, builds on this body of work in providing a greater understanding of the, requirements, responsibilities and emergency management roles within the sector.   

 

This professional development pathway is structured over a two year, four - 20 week terms of clustered Units of Competency.

 

For each term’s program, the Units are clustered to provide students the opportunity to undertake a body of work, which typically replicates a workplace environment within an emergency management role.

Exit Opportunities

Diploma graduates may continue their professional development through enrolment in the three year full-time CC60 - Bachelor of Emergency Service, receiving up to 8 units of credit or up to one-year full time equivalent credit from the degree.
