Course Overview

Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries. The enormous scale of this industry, however, comes at a price in terms of its environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts. In the past, tourism planning and promotion has mainly focused on growth and expansion; however there is now a greater awareness of the negative impacts that unplanned growth and its linked stresses can have on the environment, society and economy. There is a need for tourism managers to be aware of, and proactive in, the use of sustainability concepts and better planning. The Master of Sustainable Tourism Management provides you with an advanced understanding of sustainable tourism practices that are in place worldwide. The course offers a broad range of core units as well as the opportunity to choose tourism or business related electives.

Career Information

Graduates of this degree will increase their opportunities of being employed in middle or top management positions within the tourism industry, government agencies, NGOs and other organisations with a focus on sustainability.

Number of Units Required CQUniversity uses the concept of credits to express the amount of study required for a particular course and individual units. The number of units varies between courses. Entry Requirements
  • a completed bachelor degree in any discipline from an Australian university or college, or equivalent; or
  • a completed honours degree in tourism management from an Australian university or college, or equivalent; or
  • graduates of a CQUniversity Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Tourism Management or Graduate Certificate in Management, or equivalent, may enrol in this course.

Advanced Standing (Credit for Prior Learning):
  • Applicants may be eligible for advanced standing of up to 24 credit points (4 units) may be granted for previously completed AQF 7 undergraduate studies in tourism management or business.
  • Applicants may be eligible for exemptions of up to 48 credit points (8 units) for previously completed AQF 8 Honours or postgraduate qualifications in tourism management.

Practicum/Work Placement

BUSN20020 - This is a 12cp unit. You will be placed in a company for a 10-week internship requiring 4 days per week working within the host company. You will also undertake an applied research project based on a particular issue within your host organisation. You much undertake this unit in the final trimester of your course.

Course Structure

Students who meet the prerequisite requirements and choose an internship stream in order to apply the knowledge and skills gained in this course to a professional workplace will undertake the unit BUSN20020 Business Internship to complete their course of study.
Following the application and selection process, students placed with a host organisation will undertake their work placement for 10 consecutive weeks, working standard office hours for four days per week - approximately 320 hours in total. International students should check their work rights on their individual visa to ensure they remain compliant with visa conditions at all times. More information about visa conditions can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website. Please consult a Course Advisor as you will not be able to enrol in BUSN20020 yourself.
Students who choose, instead, to undertake the elective stream in order to enhance their career development through the study of complementary units should enrol in units from the list provided below, or may choose to undertake a 12 credit point BUSN20021 Research Project.
