Unit Synopsis

This course aims to provide experience of carrying out a project in computing or information technology with the concomitant tasks of working jointly with supervisors and colleagues and presenting ideas, results and recommendations orally and in writing. The content is flexible depending on the nature of the project. An approximate guide for a 'typical' project is given below: Feasibility Study/Literature Survey 1 week, Systems Design/Development of Algorithms 2 weeks, Development of Computer Programs 5 1/2 weeks, Testing 1 week, and Report 2 1/2 weeks. There is a list of projects, available from the program coordinator, from which a student may select a project. Alternatively, students may devise their own projects and locate a supervisor or supervisors. The final choice of project and supervisor requires the approval of the Head of School. Each project is assessed by two academic staff (including the supervisor) and the project coordinator. The grade given is determined by: the extent to which the student has satisfied the objectives of the project; the style and presentation of the report; the amount of originality in the project; remarks, recommendations and commendations from outside sources; the degree of difficulty of the project; the time taken to complete the project. Both originality and a high degree of difficulty are required in a project for it to be considered for the award of a high distinction grade. Two copies of the project are to be submitted.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
