COIT20259 - Enterprise Computing Architecture

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit introduces you to the components, architectures and industrial standards involved in the design and implementation of enterprise software applications. The focus will be on applications employing 3 tiers including a presentation tier, an application tier and a data persistence tier. You will work in a small team for the design and development of a 3-tier enterprise application project. In terms of technology, both traditional desktop applications and web-based applications will be covered and different technology platforms will be compared and contrasted. Emerging technologies and current research issues will be discussed.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 20%
2. Practical and Written Assessment 50%
3. Written Assessment 30%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Coordinator reflection
Feedback
Industry are moving to newer versions of Java Enterprise Edition
Recommendation
Update the unit from Java EE 8 to the latest Jakarta EE 9 to keep up with the technology advancement
Action Taken
Upgrade to Jakarta EE 9 has been implemented and delivered for Term 1 and Term 2 2023.
Source: Coordinator reflection
Feedback
Maintain an evolvable technical structure of the unit
Recommendation
The three tier (persistence, business, and presentation) architecture needs to be kept as a complete backbone for the unit. The industry's new released techniques (such as microservices) can be updated on the basis of the backbone.
Action Taken
Replacing Jakarta Messaging with Microservices has been implemented and delivered in Term 2 2023.
Source: Unit Coordinator self reflection and teaching team feedback
Feedback
Upgrade Jakarta EE development and runtime environments
Recommendation
When JDK 21 LTS is released in Sep 2023, GlassFish can be updated to version 7 to support Jakarta EE 10
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: Unit Coordinator self reflection and teaching team feedback
Feedback
Not enough depth in data exchange between systems so difficult for students to apply
Recommendation
Strengthen industry adopted data exchange standards in XML and JSON by introducing more on JAXP, JAXB, JSON-P, JSON-B and JAX-RS.
Action Taken
Nil.
Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the major enterprise software architectures
  2. Analyse and evaluate the design options available for a given scenario depicting a complex enterprise problem
  3. Design and implement complex 3-tier applications
  4. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively as part of a productive team
  5. Assess the potential impact of emerging enterprise computing technologies to various stakeholders
  6. Critically evaluate key research areas in enterprise computing.

Australian Computer Society (ACS) recognises the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA). SFIA is in use in over 100 countries and provides a widely used and consistent definition of ICT skills. SFIA is increasingly being used when developing job descriptions and role profiles.
ACS members can use the tool MySFIA to build a skills profile at https://www.acs.org.au/professionalrecognition/mysfia-b2c.html
This unit contributes to the following workplace skills as defined by SFIA. The SFIA code is included:
  • Systems Design (DESN)
  • Software Design (SWDN)
  • Programming/Software Development (PROG)
  • Data modelling and design (DTAN)
  • Database design (DBDS)
  • User experience design (HCEV)
  • Testing (TEST)
  • Release and deployment (RELM)
  • Application support (ASUP).
