Unit Synopsis
This unit is the third in a structured sequence of six Professional Midwifery Practice units within the Bachelor of Midwifery program. It builds on the foundational knowledge gained in Professional Midwifery Practice 1 and 2, further developing your understanding of the midwife’s role in facilitating normal physiological processes across pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period. This unit supports the progressive development of your clinical midwifery skills, focusing on evidence-based, woman-centred care. Under supervision, you will undertake comprehensive assessments and plan care collaboratively with women, midwives, and interdisciplinary teams. Emphasis is placed on cultivating adaptive communication strategies to engage meaningfully with women, families, and members of the multidisciplinary team. Through ongoing critical reflection on your Continuity of Care Experiences (COCE), you will enhance your knowledge and skills. Guided by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice (2018), you will have the opportunity to demonstrate increasing competence in ethical, safe, and culturally responsive midwifery practice. This unit includes a compulsory five-day residential school, comprising two days of online learning followed by three days of face-to-face clinical skills development. Successful completion of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), held during the residential school, is required to progress to the Midwifery Professional Experience (MPE) placement. To meet clinical requirements, you must complete a minimum of 160 hours of supervised MPE and maintain documentation of your COCEs, demonstrating developing competence and reflective learning across the childbearing continuum.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

- Provide, under supervision, comprehensive, evidence-based, woman-centred midwifery care during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the immediate postnatal period by conducting assessments, planning care, and collaborating effectively with women and their families, midwives, and multidisciplinary teams
- Demonstrate, under supervision, safe and effective administration of pharmacological treatments relevant to maternity care, applying legal, ethical, and professional frameworks alongside evidence-based medication knowledge to support informed, woman-centred decisions
- Critically reflect on clinical learning related to midwifery professional experience and Continuity of Care Experiences, identifying implications for professional development and applying insights to strengthen midwifery practice
- Demonstrate progressive development of midwifery competence consistent with the Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia Midwife Standards for Practice (2018).
