MDWF12009 - Professional Midwifery Practice 4

Showing: 2026 HE Term 1
General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is the fourth in a structured sequence of six Professional Midwifery Practice units within the Bachelor of Midwifery program. This unit builds on the foundational knowledge gained in Professional Midwifery Practice 1, 2, and 3, and will develop your understanding of the midwife’s role in caring for women experiencing complexities across the childbearing continuum. This unit supports the development of your clinical midwifery skills in the context of complexity, focusing on ethical, safe, and culturally responsive care. You will engage in assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating care for women with complex physiological and psychosocial needs during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods. Care will be provided collaboratively with intra- and interprofessional teams, guided by the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral (2021). Through ongoing critical reflection on your Continuity of Care Experiences (COCE), you will deepen your knowledge and enhance your clinical capabilities. Guided by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice (2018), you will have the opportunity to demonstrate increasing competence in midwifery practice when care becomes complex. This unit includes a compulsory five-day residential school, comprising two days of online learning followed by three days of face-to-face clinical skills development. Successful completion of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), held during the residential school, is required to progress to the Midwifery Professional Experience (MPE) placement. To meet clinical requirements, you must complete a minimum of 160 hours of supervised practicum and maintain documentation of your COCEs, demonstrating developing competence and reflective learning across the childbearing continuum.

International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
