NURS11166 - Health and Assessment in Nursing

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Throughout this unit, you will acquire fundamental knowledge and skills to provide basic nursing care at at beginning level. In particular, you will be able to conduct a holistic assessment and assist a person with their activities of daily living in the simulated environment. You will be introduced to the significance of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) and other policies, codes, and guidelines relevant to professional nursing practice. You will explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and commence using the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will become familiar with scope of practice using the decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You are required to participate in compulsory on-campus workshops or a residential school for this unit.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

I just want to say I have loved this subject the most out of all 4 for this term. I really enjoyed myself at residential school in Brisbane with Tracey. She was so knowledgeable and professional yet still easy to approach when needing help and gave appropriate knowledge for our level.

If possible, please include the information that how to complete the checks for placement in the practical unit for the entire class. As some of the documents are difficult to complete and need help. If the tutor will provide the information in the class, then it would really be helpful, especially for the international students, who struggle a lot till the deadline of the checks to complete it. One more request, please request the student help desk at the university they should guide and inform the students if they require the WIL team's help rather than saying that students can only contact the WIL team through email or call, which sometimes takes more time. Even though the WIL team is available in building 5.

This has been by far the most well organised and implemented subject I have ever done. The academics have made all expectations very clear, I have enjoyed the layout of the weekly content and the extra readings. The residential school was extremely useful and the feedback was exceptional. I highly rate this subject and the teaching team. The weekly chats were also a wonderful alternative to tutorials and I would recommend this for other subjects to take on board.

More time needs to be taken in the writing/proofreading of subject materials that are uploaded to moodle. There were significant spelling and grammatical errors throughout the unit, as well as in the assessment quizzes.

The maths component of the unit should be completed at home before attending residential school. Issues with clarity.
Recommendation
The maths exam is invigilated and therefore requires lecturers to oversee it as it is in progress. The exam questions are reviewed by the Head of Course (HoC), Head of College (HoC) and the Dean of Learning and Teaching (DDLT). This process will continue every term.
