NURS13124 - Critical Care Nursing

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The course will introduce the student to concepts and knowledge needed to effectively care for clients experiencing complex alterations in health. The student will be encouraged to apply knowledge of human science to the pathophysiological, biopsychological, and psychosocial responses occurring with individuals and families experiencing complex alterations in health. Students will be asked to critically analysis the care provided to clients, including strategies to assist individuals and their family cope with crisis situations. In addition the student will need to demonstrate understanding of the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of safe nursing care in various complex health care settings. Knowledge of ethico-legal issues and collaborative care processes including the use of pharmacological agents, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures related to a range of complex health alterations will also be examined. Participation in the residential school is compulsory for all students.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Students attending the Residential School at Noosa expressed concern that their didn’t have the same learning opportunities as students at other campuses due to staffing issues
Recommendation
Dean and Noosa staff have been advised of student concerns and will explore options to ensure more equitable learning opportunities are available.

The learning resources for this course have been designed to cater to a variety of learning styles. There are no formal lectures for this course as a detailed study guide has been provided along with PowerPoint summaries available for download from the course moodle site. These PowerPoint summaries contain lecture information for NURS13124 Critical Care Nursing. Nevertheless a small number of students are requesting formal lectures in addition to the numerous study resources already provided in the course.
Recommendation
To cater to those students wishing to view lectures, YouTube video lectures relevant to the course material will be made available on the course moodle site. The YouTube videos offer variety and are just like having guest lecturers deliver the course content. Should students have any questions or comments about the content of the YouTube videos they will be able to post these to the Study Resources Discussion Board available on the course Moodle site, email the lecturer directly or raise their questions at residential school. This information will also be made available in the Study Guide.
