Unit Synopsis

This unit provides you with an introduction to the micro skills of interpersonal communication for professional practice with service users, colleagues and other significant stakeholders. You will be exposed to a range of practice situations, interacting with individuals and groups, directly and through a range of distance-communication mediums. You will gain knowledge and skills required for professional working relationships, such as active and reflective listening, assertive communication, negotiation and managing conflict. You will be introduced to the complexities of working in a multicultural context and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. You will explore communication strategies for working with people of varying world views, and values, reflecting their ethnicity, religion, and other forms of social diversity. Throughout the unit, you will be given the opportunity to develop your capacity for critical self-reflection, and be aware of and manage your emotional responses in interacting with others.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
