SPCH14001 - Complex Disorders in Speech Pathology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Students will increase their professional competencies by working with case-based studies of clients presenting with complex health and communication needs. Students will explore current models of best practice in assessment and intervention for clients with complex communication and/or swallowing needs. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to study the role and scope of practice of the professional speech pathologist working in a multidisciplinary environment.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Continue to vary the clinical topics covered in 2024 to reflect current trends in speech pathology practice.
Recommendation
It is recommended that at the curriculum meeting for the CB87 program in late 2023 the Speech Pathology team collaborate to ensure that the topics covered in 2024 are contemporary and relevant.
Action Taken
In 2023 the topics for 2024 were collectively discussed at the CB87 curriculum meeting and designed to capture any gaps in the curriculum and the changing nature of speech pathology practice.

Feedback
The case studies provided for each weekly tutorial should have more explicit instructions regarding the expectations of the students prior to attending the tutorial.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the introduction video for SPCH14001 more clearly explains the expectations for student preparations and contributions during tutorials.
Action Taken
In 2024 the introduction video for the unit clearly outlined expectations for the tutorials and the likely benefits to the students if the expectations were followed.

Feedback
Continue to include weekly case studies as the primary means by which students apply knowledge from the weekly lectures and practise verbal communication skills to be used in oral exams.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the use of case studies to enhance student learning and preparation for student exams continues to be the main learning approach in tutorials.

Continue to invite people with lived experience and/or industry experts to contribute specialist knowledge to the evolving topics in SPCH14001.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator invites guest speakers to contribute specialist knowledge in 2025 to enhance student knowledge and connections with industry.
