Explore a range of exciting possibilities with this entry-level qualification and build foundation skills for your future in electronic design, programming, or industrial design. The Certificate II in Autonomous Technologies is a Start TAFE Now (STN) in schools course.


Entry Requirements

February intake open to Year 10 and 11 students. July intake open to Year 10 students only, due to the 18-month duration.

Completion of the BKSB (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course. It is highly recommended that students have attained a Sound Achievement (SA) result in year 10 numeracy and literacy subjects or equivalent prior to enrolling in this course. There are no other entry requirements.

Resources required: It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access CQUniversity's online learning management system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all CQUniversity locations.

CQUniversity online students must have access to a Windows 10 or 11 computer. Some tasks cannot be done on a Mac M1 computer. You will also require access to personal stationery and a USB or external hard drive (minimum 1TB).

Need to know: Compulsory face-to-face attendance is required 1-day per week at a CQUniversity campus. The course is 18 months (6 school terms) in duration.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

This course is an entry-level pathway program for school-based students and focuses on developing the skills needed to adapt to existing and new automated technologies introduced as a result of Industry 4.0. Graduates will demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work in entry level roles within autonomous environments and to undertake further education pathways in a range of technical, engineering, trade and information communication technology, innovative thinking, networking and programming. You'll learn to understand the programming language Python and use some of the coding, programming and simulator technologies.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, job opportunities in this area are expected to experience strong growth with more than 17,700 positions expected by 2026.

Successful completion of this course will prepare you to enter and work within the fields of autonomous environments or continue with further study in this area.

Delivery Agreement

The Queensland Future Skills (QFS) Partnership is a partnership between BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), TAFE Queensland, and CQUniversity Australia. Through significant consultation with industry, subject-matter experts and community organisations, the Certificate II in Autonomous Technologies was developed to equip the current and future workforce with skills and capabilities for the changing nature of work in the modern Mining Equipment, Technology, and Services (METS) sector in Queensland.

Course Structures

In order to complete this course, you must:

  1. Complete 14 core units
  2. Complete 2 elective units

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

*All study modes may include Vocational placement and/or work integrated learning.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.
