Course Details

Course Summary

This course is ideal for those with a passion for working with at-risk communities. This qualification aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to work with at-risk youth, develop relationships with families and facilitate family intervention, effectively provide trauma-informed care, develop relationships with families and work with people with mental health issues. Workers operate under a broad supervision framework and within clearly defined organisational guidelines, service plans and position specifications. The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication. 


Entry Requirements

Students are required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course.

Mandatory placement checks are compulsory for this course. The student will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check relevant to their State or Territory, along with an Australian Federal Police Check and a Student ID Card. The student must ensure that they meet the requirements for these checks prior to placement. The student may be required to undertake a pre-placement interview with host organisations and placement may be subject to the student meeting the requirements of the organisation. The Vocational Placement will entail 120 hours within a relevant work setting. Placement will be undertaken towards the end of the course. If the student is currently working in a relevant role they may be eligible to undertake placement hours with existing employer. This will be subject to approval by the Head of Course and agreement from the employer. 


Vocational Placement and Work Integrated Learning

Students must complete a Vocational Placement and/or Work Integrated Learning as part of this qualification.

Additional information

This qualification requires a 120 hour placement within an appropriate work setting and will be undertaken toward the end of the course. Students who are currently working in a relevant role may be eligible to undertake placement with their existing employer, subject to approval from the relevant Head of Course and agreement from the employer. Otherwise, the CQUniversity Workforce Integrated Learning (WIL) team will endeavour to arrange the placement location within the student's community, however, circumstances may require the student to relocate to complete the placement.

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.
