MEDI11004 - Professional Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Students learn to interact effectively with clients and peers through an understanding of professional and interprofessional relationships. This unit provides an overview of the social, legal and ethical issues that impact on the experience of illness, equity of health care and best practice. It contextualises therapeutic communication and collaborative teamwork skills and introduces the student to evidence based practice, reflective practice and decision making in the health professions.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Student expectations were not aligned as learning resources were not recorded lecture videos and PowerPoint presentations.
Recommendation
Investigate creating some video learning resources to align with student expectations.
Action Taken
A small number of videos were created about content and assessment tasks. A few short videos were provided from external sources as complementary supportive direct learning objects into the tutorials. As there are no recorded lectures, there may be further scope to offer recorded learning resources for key content areas that may assist students with their expectations.

Feedback
Students performed well in this unit overall with approximately 80% of students receiving a HD or D grade.
Recommendation
Review marking rubrics and test questions to allow for better discrimination between levels of performance.
Action Taken
New rubric were created and reviewed. This remains an area for ongoing improvement for the next iteration as an even higher proportion gained HDs than previously. The students were intrinsically motivated to demonstrate high performance.

Send frequent reminders and announcements so that attendance and participation in scheduled sessions occurs.

Investigate methods to combine the various elements including templates into a single overarching guidance document for scaffolding purposes with pre, during and post tasks highlighted.

  8. Discuss the concept of quality patient care and inclusive decision-making in the health professions
  9. Explain social issues and the attributes, motivations, skills, roles and actions that underpin positive social change and impact.

This is a core unit for many of the allied health courses which are subject to external accreditation by a range of professional and regulatory bodies. It introduces a range of concepts and professional competencies at a foundational level.
