Unit Synopsis

This module develops the analytic skills necessary for implementing applied psychological research and analysis. As such, the module provides for both theoretical input and a heavy component of computer based experiential exercises using the SPSS statistics package.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 1 - 2018 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 4.2 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 55.36% response rate.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

The textbook suits some students more than others. Field has an informal, discursive approach, which is less intimidating than most statistics textbooks. However, many students find Field too long-winded.
No text will suit all students, but it is particularly important to make choices that support those students who are less confident with statistics. Accordingly, the current text will be retained.
Action Taken
The current text was retained, but will be upgraded to the new edition which will require changes to the lecture notes.

Consider breaking up delivery of content, so as to avoid 2 hour lecture as being too much content to absorb in one sitting.
There is a continuing process of introducing targeted, specific and short recorded videos on particular topics. The proportion of content introduced in this manner should be increased next offering.
Action Taken
This will need to be considered further in 2019 as a change of lecturers in this term has delayed implementation. This remains a focus as short 'how to' videos in particular appear useful for students.

Adjust the assessment percentage of the SPSS practical component
Whilst the weekly iterative assessment attracts much positive comment, students also feel that it may be worth too much of the overall course grade. Accordingly, an adjustment of the assessment weights will be considered so as to slightly reduce the weight given to the SPSS practicals.
Action Taken
After consideration with discipline peers it was decided the current weighting was appropriate and will therefore remain.

Update unit content to reflect current MACROs and the new Field textbook
With the introduction of the new PROCESS macro, new instructions for installing and using the macro will be required. Lecture content will need to be updated to support the new textbook.
