Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.
Assessment Tasks
| Assessment Task | Weighting |
|---|---|
| 1. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) | 50% |
| 2. Oral Examination | 50% |
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Source: Unit coordinator reflection and observation, and formal student feedback.
Continue to include weekly case studies as the primary means by which students apply knowledge from the weekly lectures and practise verbal communication skills to be used in oral exams.
It is recommended that the use of case studies to enhance student learning and preparation for student exams continues to be the main learning approach in tutorials.
In 2025 the same format of case based tutorials was applied to all unit topics.
Source: Unit coordinator reflection and observation, and informal student feedback.
Continue to invite people with lived experience and/or industry experts to contribute specialist knowledge to the evolving topics in SPCH14001.
It is recommended that the unit coordinator invites guest speakers to contribute specialist knowledge in 2025 to enhance student knowledge and connections with industry.
In 2025 guest speakers were invited to speak on specialist topics to enhance student learning.

Enhance the clarity and detail of the Assessment 1 and 2 rubrics to better communicate expectations to students
It is recommended that additional detail be incorporated into the Assessment 1 and 2 rubrics to improve understanding of expectations around task requirements and help students better understand how their work will be evaluated.
In Progress
Source: Formal student SUTE feedback
Increase the explicit connection between clinical topics and their real-world application to help students better understand their relevance to professional practice
It is recommended that the real-world relevance of clinical topics be made more explicit within the unit content and assessment tasks to strengthen the connection between theory and professional practice.
