This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting, who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason. Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support. This Qualification has specialisation pathways of ageing, disability, home and community. To achieve this qualification, the student must have completed at least 120 hours of vocational placement as detailed in the assessment requirements of the units of competency. The unit CHCCCS023, support independence and well being links with the vocational placement.
There are no entry requirements for this course however, there are mandatory clinical placement requirements which need to be met. Mandatory clinical placement requirements as per the CQU Immunisation Policy and for patient and student safety.

Students must complete a Vocational Placement and/or Work Integrated Learning as part of this qualification.
Additional information
Vocational Placement of at least 120 hours is required, if not already working in the industry, to gain competency in this qualification. Vocational placement is organised by the teacher in consultation with the Student. On-campus - A Vocational placement competency logbook must be signed to confirm essential skills gained. Third Party assessment requires a minimum of 120 hours and competency achieved in all units. Vocational placement hours are not required if the student is employed in an aged care facility in a carer capacity. A Supervisors (Third Party) report must be signed to confirm essential skills gained. Third Party assessment requires a minimum of 120 hours and competency achieved in all units. Federal Police Check: Prior to being eligible to work in this sector the federal government requires a Federal police check to be completed. This must be uploaded to the CQU Work Integrated Learning Clinical Placement portal. Students access this portal via Moodle. An instructional video instructs students to successfully upload their documents. Classes will be facilitated on Wednesdays and Thursdays excluding school holidays.

Residential School information (Mixed Mode Only)
Students studying this course will need to attend one, compulsory four (4) day practical skills residential school. Students will be required to have completed this residential school prior to attending a practical work placement.
Residential schools are offered across several CQUniversity campuses including:
- Cairns;
- Townsville;
- Mackay;
- Rockhampton;
- Gladstone; and
- Bundaberg.
Residential school details will be provided by your teacher and students must confirm workshop dates and attendance prior to booking travel and accommodation.
Resource and Computing Requirements
It is a requirement that you have access to internet connection to access online resources which would include email, ZOOM and Moodle.
It is strongly recommended that you have access to a broadband connection or higher to access online resources that would include but are not limited to, email, internet, video streaming, electronic assessment submission.
All submissions of assessment must be uploaded electronically to the VET Moodle platform.
Work Placement Requirements
Students are required to:
• complete a mandatory work placement of at least 120 hours of direct support work in at least one aged care, home and community, disability or community service organisation, and
• meet the assessment conditions per unit of competency, which includes work placement and/or simulated assessment

Mandatory cut-off dates for submission dates of your mandatory checks can be found by clicking here. You will not be eligible to proceed to placement if you fail to meet the deadline.
Depending upon the capacity of the health care providers/facilities in the student’s geographical area, students may be expected to travel to an alternative location in order to complete their prescribed work placement. Students will only be offered one placement per student, per course, per term.
