Unit Synopsis

The integument is the body’s mirror. When alterations occur in skin integrity there is the potential that this will impact on every aspect of the person. Wound management is a complex area with new information being continually generated. You will apply an evidence based approach in exploring the principles and practice of contemporary wound management.

Pre-requisites

Students must have completed 96 credit points and NURS12158 Clinical Nursing Practice 3 or NURS13126 Critical Care Nursing

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

2. Presentation and Written Assessment 60%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

I absolutely loved this unit from start to nearly finishing. Belinda had so much knowledge in wound care that has extended my learning to a high level of understanding. I wish this unit was a subject and not an elective. Belinda is easy to approach and always proactive in our forum and Teams communication. I loved the fact Belinda checks up on you via email and offers support if struggling. Improvement on Assessment workbook to an exam would have been great. A lot of information to soak in over a 12 week period.
Recommendation
This feedback once again discussed the workbook. I have learnt a lot from the unit feedback regarding assessment items. I did withhold information throughout the term and focussed on the weeks content. However, in hindsight I would release all information as students work/family life can impact assessment tasks.

Feedback
Need to be more organised in the weekly zoom. There were constant confusing instructions on the assessment tasks. Slides would’ve been good for the weekly content.
Recommendation
The weekly ZOOM sessions were focused on the weekly content however in many ZOOMS the discussion was sidetracked by assessment questions which further confused students. In future ZOOMs, I will only be discussing the weeks content and referring the student back to the assessment information.

I found the workbook confusing. Perhaps change the assessment type.
Recommendation
I did work on this for a while to assess the student's knowledge over the term. I do agree unfortunately with this feedback. Further workbooks will need to be reduced in size with focused activities that are clear for the student and that entirely relate to the unit objectives. This assessment piece did cause some confusion with students. I did hold many ZOOM sessions explaining this assessment.

It is a shame the unit is not going to be continued as wound care is such an important skill for all nurses to know.
Recommendation
I would recommend CQU to research into commencing a post-graduate certificate for wound care. I think there would be a good uptake and a good source of income for the school.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the principles of cultural awareness and communication to enable effective collaboration with individuals, families and other members of the multidisciplinary health care team to facilitate positive outcomes for wound healing.
  2. Apply best practice principles and wound management guidelines to the assessment and management of individuals with either acute or chronic wounds.
  3. Evaluate the use of alternative wound management strategies to faciliate wound healing.
  4. Examine safe and effective person centred nursing care for individuals undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures related to wound healing.

Relate the significance of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice and specific National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards to nursing practice.
