Course Overview

The Bachelor of Nutrition will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the dynamic world of food and nutrition science. You will learn about the science behind food and nutrition including human and nutrition physiology, dietary choices and behaviours, food production, processing and technologies, public health nutrition, and health promotion for populations and individuals with different needs. You will gain experience working with nutrition service providers and industries, and other health professionals. The Bachelor of Nutrition aims to develop your skills to apply evidence-based knowledge of Clinical Nutrition, Food Technology, Pathway to Teaching (Secondary), or Public Health.

This course has 16 core units which are offered exclusively online with high-quality and engaging teaching materials. You must also choose 8 units from one of the majors: Clinical Nutrition, Food Technology, Pathway to Teaching (Secondary) or Public Health.

The Clinical Nutrition major is recommended for students intending to apply for a Master of Dietetics study at CQUniversity or other institutions. You will need to travel to the North Rockhampton campus for residential schools.

The Food Technology major is recommended for students wishing to work in the food manufacturing industry, including food production, food science, food quality control and agriculture. You will need to travel to the North Rockhampton campus or Bundaberg campus for residential schools to gain the required practical skills.

The Pathway to Teaching (Secondary) major is recommended for students wishing to continue to Master of Teaching (Secondary) and follow a career in secondary teaching in selected areas. Some units within the selected teaching areas in this major have compulsory residential schools.

The Public Health major is recommended for students pursuing a career in public health nutrition. This major will be offered exclusively online.

 

Career Information

A nutritionist is a health professional who contributes towards the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of illness by educating populations, communities and individuals on healthy eating and advocating for nutritional lifestyle changes where necessary. Nutritionists have a defined and recognisable body of knowledge and utilise scientific principles and methods in the study of nutrition, applying these results to influence the wider environment affecting food intake and eating behaviour.

Number of Units Required CQUniversity uses the concept of credits to express the amount of study required for a particular course and individual units. The number of units varies between courses. Units in undergraduate courses normally consist of 6 points of credit or multiples thereof (e.g. 12, 18, 24).
Expected Hours of Study One point of credit is equivalent to an expectation of approximately two hours of student work per week in a term.

Entry Requirements

English Language Proficiency Requirements

If you were not born in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa or United States of America, you are required to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements set by the University.

Applicants are required to provide documentation confirming completion of:

  • A secondary qualification (Year 11 and 12, or equivalent), or
  • An Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate IV qualification, or
  • An AQF Diploma level qualification, or
  • Bachelor level qualification study for a period of at least 2 years fulltime with a minimum overall GPA 4.0

completed within Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, South Africa, Ireland, or United States of America, which will meet the English proficiency.

If you do not satisfy any of the above, you will need to undertake an English language proficiency test and achieve the following scores:

  • An International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) overall band score of at least 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in each subset; or
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT - Requires 75 or better overall and no score less than 17; or
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Requires an overall score of 54 with no sub-score less than 46; or
  • An Occupational English Test with Grades A or B only in each of the four components.

English test results remain valid for no more than two years between final examination date and the date of commencement of study, and must appear on a single result certificate.

Bachelor of Nutrition is offered as an online course. However, depending on the major, students may be required to attend one or more residential schools at Rockhampton or Bundaberg campus to gain the practical skills required.

The Bachelor of Nutrition has sixteen (16) core units (96 credit points). Students must take eight (8) units (48 credit points) from one of the following majors:

  • Food Technology
  • Pathway to Teaching (Secondary)
  • Public Health

Please note that whilst individual units may be available across more than one campus, students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nutrition can only select the Online study option.

Clinical Nutrition Minor

Number of units: 8 Total credit points: 48

Clinical Nutrition major contains 8 units (48 credit points). Students intending to apply for a Master of Dietetics study at CQUniversity or other institutions would be advised to select the Clinical Nutrition major. Selection of this major does not guarantee entry into a Master of Dietetics course. You must still apply and be accepted into a Master of Dietetics course as per normal processes using academic and non-academic entry requirements. Completion of Bachelor of Nutrition (Clinical Nutrition) alone does not meet the eligibility requirements for registration as an accredited dietitian.

Students must complete the five compulsory units from the Pathway to Teaching (Secondary):

  • EDED20493 Diversity and Inclusion
  • EDED20494 Indigenous Learners and Learning
  • CHEM11042 Fundamentals of Chemistry (for Food and Nutrition, Biology, or Health and Physical Education) OR CHEM11043 Atoms Molecules and Matter (for Chemistry)

Students then choose THREE units from a single optional unit lists above, representing units from teaching disciplines of Food and Nutrition, Biology, Chemistry or Health and Physical Education. These three units must be from a single discipline (e.g. from one of the optional unit lists above).

Pathway to Teaching (Secondary) major contains 8 units (48 credit points). It is designed to fast-track students to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) after completion of the Bachelor Nutrition (Pathway to Teaching (Secondary)) for those who wish to pursue a career as a secondary school teacher in State, Catholic and Independent Schools in Australia. Selection of this major does not guarantee entry into the Master of Teaching (Secondary) course. You must still apply and be accepted into the Master of Teaching (Secondary) as per normal processes using academic and non-academic entry requirements. Once accepted into the Master of Teaching (Secondary), you can apply for four units of credit from the Pathway to Teaching (Secondary) Major from within the Bachelor of Nutrition. Your potential teaching strength areas will be Biology, Chemistry, Food and Nutrition (including Year 7-10 Home Economics) or Health and Physical Education. Completion of this course of study alone does not meet the eligibility requirements for teacher registration. This pathway is suited to students who wish to obtain a Bachelor of Nutrition and then go on to study a Master of Teaching (Secondary) qualification as their pathway to an accredited teaching qualification.

If choosing the Pathway to Teaching (Secondary), students will have completed enough units to satisfy teaching area requirements for entry to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) provided all other entry requirements have been met. Students entering the Master of Teaching (Secondary) must have two teaching areas based on previous study - a major (to teach Year 7 – 12) and a minor (to teach Year 7 – 10).

The four units from the Master of Teaching (Secondary) that can be studied in this course which can then be credited towards that qualification include

In addition to these units, students will complete CHEM11042 Fundamentals of Chemistry (for Food and Nutrition, Biology, Chemistry or Health and Physical Education disciplines) or CHEM11043 Atoms Molecules and Matter (for the Chemistry discipline), and will also choose to study units that allow them to meet entry requirements to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) for a major teaching area. Through completing the units in the core, students meet the requirements of a minor in Junior Science.

In order to meet the requirements of a major, students can choose an additional 3 units in Food and Nutrition, Biology, Chemistry or Health and Physical Education from the units listed in the handbook for CC13 Bachelor of Education (Secondary) for one of these teaching areas. These are listed in the Optional Unit lists below.

The Public Health major contains 8 units (48 credit points). This major provides you with the knowledge and skills to develop nutrition policies and guidelines for governmental and non-governmental organisations, food industries, food service providers, and schools to promote healthy diet and nutrition at the population level and prevent nutrition-related health issues such as obesity and cardiovascular disease.  

Students intending to apply for a Master of Dietetics study at CQUniversity or other institutions would be advised to select the Clinical Nutrition major.
